So some of you may be aware that next saturday I shall be embarking on a 3 week adventure with me good friend Rachel, taking us through the major hotspots of the state-ridden country that is America.

The itinerary is:
New York - 6 nights
LA - 4 nights
Las Vegas/Yosimite NP/Death Vally road trip in a convertible - 4 nights
San Francisco - 4 nights
Chicago - 3 nights

(at this point I would lake to state for the record "damn we like those apples")

Now I've done New york a few times before but none of the other places. Any suggestions of cool stuff to see?

The cheese is worth the squeeze.

Las Vegas

Please tell us you're going to do the 'Vegas' thing for a night and drink, play poker, slots & blackjack and cavort with the plastic ladies! One day, I will do it too

Try not to lose it all and then get married to a stripper at a kiosk, though... these things often turn out this way if you're not careful, I saw it in a film.

(If you are actually going to spend a night in the casinos, let me know and I'll supply you with at least enough tips to not lose too much money whilst still having a gambletastic time )

Yeah I'll of course have to have a little go cos that's what you do in Vegas. But purely for fun 'cos I know I'll lose
Any tips or tricks will be well appreciated though.

Dunno about marrying strippers but I will be keeping count of the Elvis impersonators I come across
So where's this ball of twine?

Or double zero, since it's going to be a dirty American roulette table.

Twine!

It's just one of many dozens of bizarre roadside tourist attactions scattered across America, most are utterty bizarre. In fact, you should check here: http://www.roadsideamerica.com/ to see if you'll be passing any such attractions as:
Hitler's typewriter and stamp collection!
The Mother Featherlegs prostitute monument!
The jug shaped building!
The worlds largest hairball! (Weighing 2.5 pounds, it came from a hog's stomach. How nice.)

Hello All

It's 8.30am, I've just ventured out into a rainy New York morning to get my first coffee of the day and all is well.
Flight was fun, particularly when the intense fog surrounding the entire north-eastern seaboard was so thick that we had to abort our first landing about 2 metres from the ground and try for a different runway. Rachel took a bit of calming down after that one.
Spent the evening wandering throught Times Square and had some dinner in Carnegie's Deli - posh and a half, the rich and famous are always banging on about it.
So despite the weather I think the plan is just to take a couple of days to wander the island, see the sights and attempt to scale tall buildings. Today we may try the Empire State if the weather clears up a bit, otherwise it'll be some battery park/seaports/wall street flavoured fun.

Peace yo

new york rocks my world!

sunday we checked out downtown with a whole wandering voyage. we found the apartment block they use in Friends in Greenwich Village, had lunch at south street seaport, gazed out at liberty from battery park and wandered down wall street. By the time we'd paid our respects at Gound Zero it was time to wander back up town and haul ass to Queens where an old friend from camp was hosting a party to celebrate the first episode of season 4 of Family Guy and the 350th episode of the Simpsons. Beer, chips, pizza and cartoons. Rock! It was also very nice to spend a night with locals doing local things, taking some time out of the tourist trail. Plus Steve's apartment is on the 12th floor and has an AMAZING view of the Manhatten skyline.
Yesterday we did uptown, taking in grand central, a bit more times square, the rockefeler centre and central park. While in central park we saw the mightiest bit of filming going on. It's quite common that you'll see someone filming for a TV series in there but this was something different - from far off we just saw loads of trucks and lighting equipment scattered about the place so went to have a closer look, that was when we hear a guy shouting 'action' and suddenly we see about 50 old grannies dancing in formation to some random funk music waving their zimmer-frames like nutters! And better yet we found out from one of the security guards that they were filming the remake of 'The Producers'. I can't wait to see that one.
Then the rains came once more so we opted for Sin City at the cinema followed by dinner in Hooters - Rachel's idea so I wasn't accepting and chauvenist labelling. However winnie, our waitress was damn fine and wearing the classic Hooters uniform...
Finish off with some beers in a local Irish bar and that's what I call a good day.
After both failing to get up the Empire State building (queues made us cry)and failing fo do a harbour cruise (they were only doing the epic 3 hour ones today) we have decided to spend the afternoon doing our own things. I think I might buy some jazz and then check out the UN.

nice

Yo

OK so it's now our last day in Manhattan. Having checked out the wonders of Coney Island (it was all a bit closed down 'cos the season hasn't really started yet but we did get to play 'Shoot the Freak' which is blasting paintballs at a guy in armour legging it round a target range), the United Nations (which is actually not in America, the land is officially international territory jointly owned by all UN member states - our guide was very pleased about this 'cos she was Chinese and didn't have a work visa for the US, but hey she wasn't working in the US! Saw the UN general assembly debating the nuclear non-proliferation treaty while I was there! We had to keep a bit quiet and guards with guns soon shifted us on ), Chinatown (Chinese), Little Italy (Italian) and eaten at Bubba Gump Shimp Company (shrimp-tastic and very very cheesy) we have but a short list of stuff to get sorted before we fly off to LA.
Today it's all about doing Central Park properly, getting Rachel some souveneers, checking out the museaum of sex (hey, it's a novelty yank thing) and heading up the Empire state. Nice day to be doing all of this.
So random occurrences of the last couple of days:
Shopped in an purely orthodox Jewish high tech electrical store - ringlets galore!
Had my socks stolen by a German room-mate
Am now in a bunk next to 2 middle aged Russian lesbians
On the way back from the UN I was stopped by a Rabbi who asked me if I knew of anyone who wanted some work as a messenger. I was a little tempted to volunteer 'cos hey, I could say I spent the afternoon being a Rabbi's messenger but then I got thinking that maybe he wanted a 'messenger of God' so I politely told him I was a tourist and ran.

Ooh and we are now regulars in a local Irish bar! The barman gives us a wave and knows our drinks already

Rightyho, off to enjoy me last day

Greetings from California!

Oh yeah, we made it to the west coast and all is mighty fine!
We had a fairly chilled last day in New York - we walked right the way up through Central Park to Jimmy's, my favourite pizza place in the world on 106th and Columbus - $1.25 for a slice of the nicest, crispiest pizza you can imagine. We then caught a bus downtown to the Museum of Sex which was definitely interesting - it's a new feature in the city and is apparently going down a storm. I particularly enjoyed the enlightened childrens books in the gift shop, one in particular was called 'Daddy and his room-mate'
We had a quiet evening 'cos Rach was having some completely understandable homesickness and the idea of heading another 2600 miles further from home but we still had time for a final drink in The Tempest, our local pub.
So we got up early, got a cab to JFK, saying goodbye to the big city on the way over and flew off to LA. 6 hours and we didn't even leave the country. Damn this is a big place! Was well enjoying the view looking down on the Rockies as we flew over though. Lovely corner of the world.
So we got to our hostel, found we'd been shifted to their sister hostel, groaned a bit 'cos it was another big trek, brightened up when we realised that the shift had resulted in us getting a private room (I enjoyed the floor but it was still better having an en-suite and knowing that no-one else has the key to your room). The new place is right on Venice beach so as soon as we'd changed into beach gear we went off adventuring.
Venice beach. Ah. The spot where Jim Morrison sang his first ever lyric to Ray Manzarek thus forming The Doors. Hitting the beach was a bit of a pilgrimage for me and we spent a long afternoon/evening checking out our end or the beach, paddling in the Pacific and then heading up to Santa Monica to check out the Boulevard and the strip.
Today we did Universal Studios, Hollywood. DAMN that was good! All the rides were terrific, particularly Back to the Future and Terminator 2 but the highlight was definately the tour of the production lots - we saw the Bates Motel from Psycho, rows upon rows of fake streets that had been used for anything from Dirty Harry to Bruce Almighty and we ever cruised past the end of Wisteria Lane from Deperate Housewives (we couldn't go down it 'cos they were filming). Also during the trip they drive the bus into proper live action adventures - we got attacked by King Kong, caught in an earthquake and caught in a vortex. Sooooo good.
Ooh and also when we went to the special effects demo me and Rach volunteered to be the special guests for demonstrations of the effects. Rachel got to sit at a dinner party with the Nutty Professor as the grandmother and bury me alive in an ancient egyptian type scenario. I got strapped to a podium and tortured then vanished and reappeared later to have my arm sliced open with a carving knife. All in the name of showbiz though
Off for some dinner shortly and then getting the hire car tomorrow for some pre-road trip LA jaunts. Maybe Beverly Hills of Malibu would be a fun day trip. also my boy Locodanny will be joining us! Woo.
We recon we're going to leave LA on Monday and spend a night in Orange County by the bay before heading off to Vegas. LA is nice but I'm down with moving on to a more chilled part of the state.

Other highlights of the past coupla days:
My first ever pint of draught Anchor Steam Ale - best beer in the world by far
Finding a T-shirt with a big picture of Arnie and the words 'My governer can beat up your governer'
The random things Rachel keeps coming out with - just yesterday she complained that the Pacific Ocean was too wet and that her sunglasses made things darker
Seeing the Hollywood Hills and the famous sign for the first time
Driving through Compton and surviving (the freeway to Hollywood passes throught it, there's no other way round)

Locodanny here! First time in ages. Just got back from seeing my main man, Spanners so figured I'd give a quick post.

We hit Beverly Hills - Rodeo Drive and the like - and then some ice cream sandwhiches at Diddy Reise in Westwood.

That is all. Hope all are well. BrightonBabe - I miss you like none other!

Bright light city gonna set my soul
Gonna set my soul on fire
Got a whole lot of money that's ready to burn,
So get those stakes up higher
There's a thousand pretty women waitin' out there
And they're all livin' devil may care
And I'm just the devil with love to spare
Viva Las Vegas, Viva Las Vegas

How I wish that there were more
Than the twenty-four hours in the day
'Cause even if there were forty more
I wouldn't sleep a minute away
Oh, there's black jack and poker and the roulette wheel
A fortune won and lost on ev'ry deal
All you need's a strong heart and a nerve of steel
Viva Las Vegas, Viva Las Vegas

Viva Las Vegas with you neon flashin'
And your one armbandits crashin'
All those hopes down the drain
Viva Las Vegas turnin' day into nighttime
Turnin' night into daytime
If you see it once
You'll never be the same again

I'm gonna keep on the run
I'm gonna have me some fun
If it costs me my very last dime
If I wind up broke up well
I'll always remember that I had a swingin' time
I'm gonna give it ev'rything I've got
Lady luck please let the dice stay hot
Let me shout a seven with ev'ry shot
Viva Las Vegas, Viva Las Vegas,
Viva, Viva Las Vegas

Hey all

Sorry about the shortness of that last one but I was at a randomly expensive kiosk giving me 3 minutes a buck and I had 10 seconds left
So t'internet has been evading me for the past little while so here's a rundown of the past week of the adventure.

Sunday - Met my boy Locodanny and we went to pick up the car. She is the nicest moonlight blue Chrysler Sebring convertible you can imagine. 6 disc CD changer, electric seats and some major air-con. Mmmm. Anyways Loco took us to Rodeo drive and other showbiz hangouts in LA while I got used to driving Laquitia (Rachel named her, what can I say?). A particular high point was having a piss in the hotel where they filmed Pretty Woman, definitely the nicest place I've ever relieved myself. Hooters for dinner (Rachel's choice - honest!) rounded off the day nicely.

Monday - Drove up to Hollywood Boulevard to check out all the stars names on the pavements and Gruman's Chinese Theater where the stars leave their hand/foot prints. While we were up there we had lunch in a quiaint little diner and found ourselves chewing alongside the guy that played Ned Schneebly in School of Rock and the lass that played Stephanie in Sideways. OK, maybe not A list but better than I get on a normal lunchtime in Birmingham.
Then we headed out of LA to spend the evening in Newport Beach in Orange Country (The O.C.). Not a bad journey all things considered but we did have problems when we'd parked to look at the map and try and figure out what the crap the GPS was trying to tell us and a big SUV reversed into us! Thankfully it was only a bent license plate although I soon realised exactly why it had hapenned when the driver of the SUV hobbled out on a zimmerframe. Yikes!
Still though, damn Orange County is a pretty place. Managed to track down some authentic clam chouder in a bread bowl and then went to see some lady Blues.

Tuesday - Drove to Vegas!!!!!!! Only took about 4 and a half hours After some searching about for a reasonably priced room (Caesar's Palace, Flamingo's and The Sahara were extortionate) we settled on Circus Circus - a huge casino with its own theme park, wedding chapel and the electricity requirement of a standard third world country. We got well hooked on the video poker and made a couple of winnings decent enough to keep us afloat And the prime rib was epic!

Wednesday - Day spent wandering the strip and checking out the other casinos. We saw Seigfreid and Roy's white Tigers, checked out a Venice style canal on the first floor of the Venitia complete with singing gondalierers and got roasted in the desert sun.
Also discovered that Vegas really is the ultimate vice city - Since prostitution is legal in Nevada there were dozens and dozens of people along the strip handing out flyers which were basically porno catalogues with the telephone numbers of the 'models'. Even Rachel had a fair few thrust in her direction.
That night we did the real gambling. We had some fun with the slots and managed to win $25 on the one arm bandits (felt like real players when the thing started clunking out 100 quarters ) so we decided that since it wasn't really our money it should go into the roulette fund. I put on my lucky hat, sat at a table and got the cash changed. It lasted about 6 minutes. The first spin we bet blacks and odds and the whell gave a frikkin green zero! Still though, it wasn't really our money and we had also learned that if you look like a player the waitresses bring you free drinks. Was getting well into the Conronas!
Thought I'd risk another 20 (since I'd planned to before we won at the slots) and sat down at the table of this really moody dealer. She told be off for not putting the minimum bet ($4) on an outside space (the 50:50s etc) and twice for grabbing my winnings before she'd payed out everyone. OK so I was wrong but her attitude made the waitress realise I wasn't really a player and not offer me a beer on her next pass Still though I walked away from that table with $27 in my pocket and a grin on my face. Spanners beat Vegas! (if you don't count that first 'test' go )
All in all Vegas was much larger than I expected and even more sleazy. Was cool with all the desert surrounding it though and there were some shows I really wanted to see - Penn and Teller for a start and this other one with hot lady vampires. Hey I bet even Celine Dion's show would be fairly entertaining.

Thursday - Rocked out of vegas and made straight across the Mojave desert and up into the Sierra Nevada mountains. Snow covered mountains, barren deserts and huge forests. It was like the nicest scenery I've ever seen and we were loving cruising down the proper deserted American highways stretching as far as you could see. We even saw a baby tornado up on the high plains.
Stopped for the night on a town called Lee Viner just to the East of Yosimite National Park and overlooking Mono Lake. Loving the mountain air. And the fresh fish out of the lake. Mmmmm.
Also passsed several highway brothels presumably for frustrated truckers. I'd totally forgotten that Nevada is the only state they're legal in. The funniest one was 'Shady Lady's Brothel' which was an ohour of open road from any town. Must be a very random way of life out there...

Friday - 8 hours of driving! 8 hours! With the last hour tring to get round the San Francisco one way system. Agh! But before the trauma we again had the most breathtaking scenery ever. We actually drove through the snow covered mountain passes (2 were closed, hence the 8 hour ride that should have taken 4, ok so also our GPS was literally sending us in circles some of the way - I think some higher power didn't want us to get here). Rachel took some pictures for me but I doubt they could ever capture the vastness and the untouched beauty of the nature. Damn.
So now we're in San Fran. Both recovering from the trauma of the journey and looking forward to a glorious few days on the coast.

But enough about me, so how are you?

Loving the Frisco!
We gave the car back Saturday morning because of our truly hostile feelings towards the roads of San Fran by that point and got back to the old wandering tour of town. This place is huge but has so much character, I love just wandering round. Already had 3 cable car rides hanging out the side as we struggle up a 40 degree hill, wandered round Chinatown and Little Italy, seen the Golden Gate Bridge (in the fog), sampled many fine local beers and been to Hooters again. Rach can't get enough of it!
Today we went our seperate ways 'cos I really wanted to do Alcatraz and Rach wasn't fussed. Alcatraz was mighty! REally choppy boat ride there and back was loadsa fun even though I almost lost the hat a couple of times. I walked round the cells, saw where Al Capone and the Birdman were incarcerated, went into the hole, got a talk about all the escape attempts. Cool cool place. Also some amazing views of the bay and the city.
Golden Gate Park tomorrow for a chilled last day

If you're goin' to San Francisco
Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair
If you're goin' to San Francisco
You're gonna meet some gentle people there

For those who come to San Francisco
Summertime will be a love-in there
In the streets of San Francisco
Gentle people with flowers in their hair
All across the nation
Such a strange vibration
People in motion
There's a whole generation
With a new explanation
People in motion, people in motion

For those who come to San Francisco
Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair
