It's Poison by Alice Cooper. Extra points? Or pints? Congrats on intro of love interest - has anyone got any scary black leather getup? Second thoughts, don't really want to know about that.

Congratulations to Clara for identifying the musical reference. No congratulations to EVERYONE ELSE for not trying hard enough.

So, who's going to continue the saga?

Excuse me for mentioning it, but can I interest you in a panoramic print of York - http://www.panoramicyork.co.uk ? No? Oh well - just thought I'd ask.

No points for guessing the tune

At first I was a temp
I was part-employed
With lots of different jobs
I had tinkered and toyed
Then I got this office job
And learnt to file patiently
And type up inter-office memos
And make lots of cups of tea

So go now fax!
Order thumbtacks!
Send this letter to head office
And then calculate the tax!
Weren't you the one who should have ordered masking tape?
It's time to pull yourself together, get yourself back into shape!

It's office life!
It's low paid strife!
Your job's so meaningless that every night you try to tell your wife
That the office couldn't function if you went on holiday
But then she'll say
That she loves you anyway....

(segue into some romantic number, because let's face it, what musical doesn't have a romantic number?)

Edit: Is 'learnt' now archaic? Feel free to swap it for 'learned' if so...

Brilliant! This is coming on extremely well.

I suspect it's the older English one - it's certainly Germanic (and therefore related to Anglo-Saxons etc) rather than the later Latin-based inflections that those dastardly French brought in with their conquering ways. I say we should keep it alive!

Think I'm missing something here... Is this an obvious song? I don't know what it is. Wah. I'm going to sulk in a corner.

I'm sure there's a joke about being afraid and petrified here, but it escapes me...

It's 'I Will Survive', a song you're bound to recognise if you heard.
Spanners did a fantastic version for the 'odes' page. I can't find it now but it's around here somewhere...

Edit: Found it:

...and then she walked into my office
Pencil skirt and coffee breath
She said her boyfriend was really off his
Food the other night and he's a chef

Oh what was she to do when she couldn't quite tell who
Her soulmate had become, he used to be her number ooooonnnnnneeeee,

So I ventured with the end game
Of steeling her away from him
'I'm afraid he'll never be the same
Let your heart change on a whim'

And in that very second, I knew that I had reckoned
To assign myself bedfellow to this girl whose hair was yellloooooow

You understand my endless desire
She said to me with a flutter
To sleep with someone who is higher
Hierarchically, I melted like butter

So I whisked from her swivel chair and I raced her right out of there
To a flat above a shop I rented, because it sold my favourite pop

And we moved in time together as we discussed now and forever
We supped our Bass shandy and she moved closer and closer to meeeee

We fell in love that night, a Thursday, we always remember that, our first date
Was inside the stationary cupboard, our office romance couldn't be uncovered.....

For the best band in Leeds, honest.

Roooaaaaarrr!!!

There's a lot of talent in this here forum. You think we could combine these powers and use them to fight crime?
