The technical name for songs-stuck-in-the-head is called 'chunking'. It's thought to have evolved to help babies learn language by firmly embedding / repeating small chunks in the mind so the language acquisition mechanism is constantly working. Nursery rhymes are simple, repetitive phrases set to simple tunes to assist this process. Amazing how deeply yet subtly our evolutionary survival traits influence us even now, in something as seemingly recently man made as the structure of our nursery rhymes

My mental soundtrack today has been Lilly the Pink. Of all the fine tracks I downloaded this weekend, why did it have to be this one

I find that my brain defaults to a radio station when I'm not concentrating. I'd end up with a notebook full of 'the wheels on the bus go round and round and shine jesus shine and have mercy have mercy have mercy on me, jolene, jolene, jolene, jolene, I need some fine wine, and you, you need to be nicer' etc.

superb and spot on. my brain does the exact same thing.

my notebook for this month would read..

'you ain't so tough come fill my little world right up right up now i see that you are all that i have fill my little world right up right up now i see that you are all that i have pete doherty come fill my little world right up right up pete doherty big brother now i see that you are all that i have big brother i am the resurrection and i am the light big brother ain't so tough excellent foo fighters tune and then the news...'

Thanks to you two, my thoughts for the last twenty minutes have been roughly
"patience of love you ain't so tough jolene jolene jolene joleee-heeene come fill my little world right up right up right up please don't take him even though you can on a plane and show me spain or somewhere jolene jolene jolene joleee-heeene I'm begging with you but in reality come fill my little jolene jolene....."

Thanks a BUNCH for that.

25% of my time is spent thinking about what I'll have for lunch, 25% about what I'll have for breakfast and 48% about what I'll have for dinner. The other 2% is filled with unimportant things like work...

Huh, now I could be wrong, but it seems like there's only 2% of your brain that Deanery can fit into. And that's what you consider to be the unimportant stuff. Poor Deanery...

Ah, you see, Deanery IS what she'll have for breakfast...

Too true, Malcolm. Too true! I'd better not go into details...

Kelly and I were referred to as 'the big guns' by a lady in her seventies on Thursday. Since then, I've had the Jenny Lewis song of that name stuck in my head. Luckily for me, I like it a lot. I also like the idea of wielding such power...

That's excellent! Why didn't you tell me sooner?

And also, how come people never say these things TO me?

I thought I had! Clearly I imagined it. I may be a big gun, but I also have a very bad memory. Also, aforementioned lady did tell you that you could sell fridges to eskimos. That one was a bit of a mystery, I thought...

I think Kelly almost certainly COULD sell fridges to eskimos, but I'm sure she wouldn't, because she would never want to take advantage of an eskimo for financial gain

And I concur with the theory that Gertrude and Kelly are big in the department!

Actually, fridges are used frequently by eskimos, they stop food freezing whilst keeping it fresh

Appropriately the song that is currently stuck in my head is called static on the radio, and the line that is stuck in my head is "all the thoughts in my head are just static on the radio"

Also, it's Friday again!

And did you know that leaving your fridge door open actually makes your kitchen hotter rather than colder?

But leaving the kitchen door open helps to restore molten ice in the North Pole.

That's because of all the beetles in it as a result of the lack of pesticide. Yay pesticide. I like it better than I like beetles in my dinner. Or in my organic squash.

Do beetles taste of tomatoes then? Why is that?

My office has a very thin flat roof so whenever it rains it sounds like a snare drummers convention.

My office is next door to a spanish restaurant so every time I open the window the room fills with the smell of pepperoni. Mmmmm.
