Judging by Diziet's birthday thread it appears that there a number of people on this here forum who are having trouble putting pictures on the forum, so I thought a quick tutorial might be useful.

I'll assume you've found a picture you want to put up somewhere. I'm also assuming you're using Internet Explorer. Personally I'm liking the lemur you can find here.

First right click on the picture. On the menu that appears Select "Properties".

On the popup that appears you'll see something that says "Address (URL)" highlight the relevant part and copy it to get a direct link to the picture. In this case http://www.theonion.com/content/files/images/Sidebox2-Picture-Of-R.jpg:

(If you happen to be using firefox then right click on the picture and select "Copy Link Location" from the menu to get the direct link to the picture:

)

Now, start your post as normal. When you want to insert the picture first type (note the lower case). You should end up with something like this:

Finish off your post as normal and submit it and you'll be able to see this:

At this point it's worth refreshing the page just to be on the safe side. Some webpages are sneaky and stop you from liberating their pictures. If you can still see it then you're fine. If not then you'll either have to create another copy online that you can use or if you don't know how to do that then you'll have to go find a different picture Or maybe if enough people someone will do another beginners guide!

Hope that helps! Feel free to use this thread for practice, and I'm sure people will help you out and generally help you get it right!

Also you can use the 'insert image' box below the smiley selector - just paste your image link in there and hit the insert button insert it at your cursor position (in Internet Explorer) or at the end of the post (in other browsers)

That's a very good warthog!

Neat tricks with Google Images:

Something else I noticed that people might find useful is this:

Let's say you've used Google Images to search for a picture. For instance here I'm quite liking the look of that horse:

So as before I go through Properties to get the direct link:

Seems like a pretty long link though. Here it is after the cut and paste:

http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:9v2E_Y46Bj75BM:http://www.gaitedmtnhorses.com/images/Something-Special.jpg

Notice how it starts with 'http://' and has another 'http://' in the middle? That's because this is in actually two links joined together by a colon.

The first half (http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:9v2E_Y46Bj75BM) is a link to the small image you see on Google Images. The second half (http://www.gaitedmtnhorses.com/images/Something-Special.jpg) is the actual direct link to the picture which is likely to be a lot bigger.

So if you enter you'll see this:

Whereas if you enter you'll see this:

If you just use the link you'll get the smaller Google Images picture and then the direct link written out next to it like so:

http://www.gaitedmtnhorses.com/images/Something-Special.jpg" />

Or as Spanners pointed out you can just drop it in the Insert Image box on the new post page.
