Almost 60 percent of Peru lies in the Amazon Rainforest, the largest expanse of jungle in the world. The area around Puerto Maldonado is the most biodiverse on the planet. On this tour, you will explore the rainforest, have an opportunity to see the wildlife as well as get an insight into the jungle way of life. A lodge is an excellent way to see the jungle in relative comfort, staying in bungalows made from local materials. All meals at the lodge are included.

Wow, sounds incredible, I imagined it would be far more 'survivalist', hence my earlier amazement. But with proper food and shelter, I agree with The_Pharaoh, it sounds like an unforgettable experience you'll look back on for the rest of your life.

Get thee to Peru!

I think the prospect of 12ft spiders would still scare me off though

WOW!!!!!

That trip basically covers the areas I spent three months in and fell utterly in love with.

Do the Inca trail. Do it now before it becomes decimated by millions of ignorant Westerners like ourselves. It is one of the MOST STUNNING and rewarding things I have EVER done.

Puerto Maldonado is great too - although I spent longer than perhaps I wanted to there when we were waiting for research passes to the rainforest. Say hello to the madman who hits lamp posts for me.

If you go make sure you have a trip on a pecci pecci up the river to Sacha Vacaya or Explorer's Inn, try and get them to take you to Lago Sandoval to see the giant otters and Monkey Island to play with baby spider monkeys.

Drink from Bamboo, go caimen spotting at night, watch shooting stars in the clearest skys I've seen in my life, see wild monkeys. Have a bloody brilliant time.

TAKE ME WITH YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!

please

Wadda you saying?
Are you callin' me a liar punk?
Are you callin' me a liar!!!!!!!

Seriously it's true! Although I think the name is different in Spanish Isla de Monos perhaps?! It's used by a charity that rescues baby spider monkeys from the wild that have been orphaned when their parents have been illegally shot (they are hunted for their meat - think Indiana Jones). They're then cared for and roam free on the island and those that can be are eventually released back into the main forest.

P.S Can you tell I got me some lessons in html!!!!!!

Spanners in his infinite wisdom was wise enough to proclaim:

Hold the front page!

Yep this is definately the one and given that wicked documentary on the Amazon last night I recon the Jungle extension might need to be done. 4 weeks.... Yeah.

The thing is, on a similar vein to the 'Worthy Ways to Spend Yer Life' thread, I really need to get out there and see some of the world and experience some other cultures while I still can. And I need to discover if what I'm doing at the moment is really what Spanners should be about. Peru will tell me whether I'm more at home in the urban rat race or on the frontier doing something worthy while i have the chance. Hmmmmm. I'll send a postcard!

Spanners if you have any doubts in your mind read this book:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0099284863/ref=sr_aps_books_1_1/026-8730877-0142814

It's an excelent book in general but pay special heed to the character Larry who rejects all the expectations on him to do the usual rat race things and decides to find out what the world is all about.

Another worthwhile read!

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/1857990765/ref=sr_aps_books_1_1/202-0178727-5451068

I read it before I went and it definitely help me get to grips with some cultural stuff a bit quicker.

It's also a damn funny story!

If I had the cash, I'd come.

Is the travel company going to do some advertising to fill up the last places?

If you don't get to go, you should at least get some compensation for your inconvenience and possibly being stuck with your annual leave booked at work.

Yeah there's now a big warning if you're about to make an anonymous post.
Have decided on this as my backup holiday: http://www.exodus.co.uk/cgi-bin/www.exodustravels.co.uk/search_holidays.pl?action=show&pagetoview=apa&log=APA It's only 2 weeks but I can do a week on my own kickin it down the coast.

The cookies expire after 3 weeks for security reasons. It was just your time my frind, it was just your time.

Also considering this:

http://www.exodus.co.uk/cgi-bin/www.exodustravels.co.uk/dates.pl?code=AYK

Kenya and Tanzania adventure, going out on Safari and stuff. Could then do a week in Europe somewhere, would quite like to do Prague or Switzerland. But Peru was the dream, you know what I'm sayin'? Hmmm. What's anyone think.
