I need to edit together a video diary of our holiday where we drove to Rome in a clapped out Volvo. Does anyone know of any good video editing software? I've got a copy of Adobe Premiere 5, but it's a bit old and doesn't seem to support the codec that my camera used.

It needs to be a half-decent editing suite so that it can mix music, fade and apply effects/compositing text etc rather than just cutting together. Don't mind Windows or Linux as I have both. Ideally free (OSS) but don't think that there's a decent one that's OSS.

Cheers.

If you want to stick with open source you can use Kino or Cinelerra.

Avid Free DV is awesome for a free application and has the advantage that it's a good basis to get into pro video editing. It's discontinued, but I'm sure you can find it somewhere.
