I was thinking that we ought to try pooling our collective minds to cracking one of those online Alternate Reality Games which are often leaked to launch films etc.

The only one I ever really put any time into was I Love Bees, because a lot of them are ridiculously difficult (e.g. all the 'crack this site' games which require very advanced technical / audio wave editing / maths knowledge). We need to identify likely candidates and then decide what we like the look of. This thread is for choosing an ARG, then we can start a new one for doing the actual quest.

More info on ARGs for the uninitiated:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alternate_reality_game

This Is Not A Game (TINAG) - Setting the ARG form apart from other games is the This Is Not A Game aesthetic, which dictates that the game not behave like a game: phone numbers mentioned in the ARG, for example, should actually work, and the game should not provide an overtly-designated playspace or ruleset to the players

So who's up for it then?

Wow, I like the sound of this! Although I'm supposed to be working, so haven't quite read the entire Wikipedia article yet... but yes, let's play!

ps I've edited the title of this thread so that it means something to people who, like me, had no idea what ARG meant.

Okay! Two up for it so far from the looks of things. If you have any technical specialties it would useful to post them here. I specialise in dawdling, anachronisms of the 17th century and the magna-doodle, but I've also been knon to turn my hand to halibut farming. In terms of actual useful technical skills for an ARG I don't really have anything but I'll be happy to try to co-ordinate our efforts.

So any ones you like the looks of or shall I come up with a shortlist? I also think we need to wait for at least half a dozen forummers to have a decent shot at it.

Edit: Skills we're likely to need are:

Audio Editing
Photo Editing
Cryptography & Frequency Analysis
Possibly some 1337 cracking skills
Knowledge of literary / geek references
Internet Detectivery
Maths
Programming
And more generally, lateral thinking and attention to minute detail will be helpful!

Skills that I have:
A bit of of Audio Editing
A bit of of Photo Editing
small amount of Cryptography & Frequency Analysis (it's been about 5-10 years since I've done anything serious in this)
I know a little about some 1337 cracking skills, but haven't done any in ernest.

Sounds good, I'm in!
My skills are remarkably similar to Agent Gonzo's with the addition of geography, bike maintenance and broadcast engineering.

I can add Swedish and Hot Stones massage therapy skills to the mix...

...if that's any help.

I can add the amazing ability to give you the right answer five minutes after someone else has already said it.

It doesn't always work admittedly, sometimes there's half an hours worth of pontificating before my brain snaps into gear and realises it's being stupid, but at least some of the time it happens...

On a tangent, I've recently upgraded my machine and downloaded Portal (a bit late, I know, but ace!). Found a secret room in it where a login was written on the wall. Went to the internet and if you go to www.aperturelaboratories.com and login with it, you can login to GLaDOS via a green terminal and play around! You can even apply for the project where it asks you 50 strange questions as part of the application procedure. Amusingly, it also asks you to remember your 64 digit Unique ID number for entering at the final stage... though it's blinking and every so often it changes as it blinks. Oh, and it's case sensitive and in lower case, but the terminal only allows you to type in capitals! Great fun

Ooh, is that the 'cjohnson' login? I found it in the game and spent a while puzzling over it as I was currently into San Andreas (Carl Johnson is the main character), but never tried it out anywhere.

I noted your filthy lies about the cake. It's delicious, and moist, and I won't hear otherwise. I have also written your name down on a small piece of paper.

Right, I reckon we've probably got enough folks to have a stab at one of these. Of course, due to the viral nature and deliberate lack of any hype or publicity they can be hard to get a lead on early doors. I'll spend the next few days trawling SA and anywhere else I can find in an attempt to get word of a new one starting up soon. Anyone else know any current / upcoming ARGs we can have a look at?

Edit: This is hilarious. Apparently Aperture Science began in 1953 as a shower curtain company, providing a low-tech portal between the inside and the outside of the shower
And it was never about Carl Johnson...

I like the sound of this. I'm good at lying about my qualifications and looking at people askance.

And I had a dream that someone ran over a giraffe in a truck. I will be a great asset to the team.

I'll pitch in though I'm not sure how much time I will be able to dedicate to it. My skill set is pretty similar to everyone else (Which the exception of the stones massage which could come in handy)

Also Portal= Best Game evah!
