I've been playing this game for about six months now, initally on the PS3 before moving to the infinitely-superior Steam version. I'm now convinced beyond all doubt that it is the most fun I've ever extracted from a piece of software. It's a class-based shooter, but one that emphasis tactics over accuracy, so instead of being dominated by the fastest mouse users, everyone has the ability to contribute effectively to a team using their unique skills and abilities.

The classes fall into two main categories:
Assault
Pyro - Close-up combat, main weapon = flamethrower.
Heavy - Close/Mid-range combat, main weapon = chaingun
Soldier - Mid-range combat, main weapon = rocket launcher
Demoman - indirect fire ability, remotely detonated mines
Scout - high movement speed, captures points quickly. Main weapon = shotgun
Sniper - as it sounds.
Support
Spy - Disguises as enemy, turns invisible, saps engineer buildings
Engineer - Builds sentry guns, dispensers and teleporters for his team
Medic - Heals friendly combatants.
Eventually each character will have three new weapons to unlock via achievements, once these are released by Valve in the free update packs. At the moment, only the Heavy, Pyro and Medic have their packs finished but others will follow soon.
The game initially shipped with a small number of maps - rather than concentrating on churning out lots of maps of reasonable quality, the team spent a long time working on a few maps to ensure they are of excellent quality and replayability. There are many different game modes such as capture the flag, deathmatch, payload (a kind of escort mission involving one team trying to push a cart along a track), and lots of user-created map / game types, from the minutely detailed to the ridiculous.
My current favourite game type is payload, after having spent a few weeks on the insane fragfests of dm_store, toy_fort_elite, floodzone_2_final, and dm_hans.
I try to vary my role as much as possible and choose classes which will help the team. Initially I favoured engineer but Medic is now my favourite class due to the incredibly demanding nature of the task during a large battle - at any one time half of your teammates are calling for medical assistance, so as a lone medic you have to triage patients as fast as you can in order to get immediate healing to those about to die. The medic also has the ability to charge up an 'ubercharge' which will turn both himself and his patient invulnerable for 10 seconds, more than enough time for your heavy/demoman/pyro to take out most of the enemy's base / team / sentry nest.
So how many players do we have on thedaddy? I'm aware of at least one other but I'm sure more of you must be fans! For those of you who do play, what are your favourite maps, and why? I find it particularly difficult to memorise map layouts quickly, but that's because I have the memory of a senile goldfish. I am currently trying to get my head around cp_steel and pl_badwater but it's a long, slow process!
Oh yes, post your records screen if you're brave enough! I will post mine when I get on a PC which doesn't block me from anything to do with games servers, but they're very skewed anyway by the previous PS3 experience I'd had before coming to the PC.
