Some really interesting stuff about how 3D games work.

I was saving that to read at work yesterday, but some IT jobsworth's already classified the site as games, thus spoiling my fun. So here's the text of it in case anyone else is having the same problem, complete with innocuous URL:

Edit: Except the line breaks are missing

The google cache or Coral cache are normally great resources for getting past jobsworthy firewalls.

Seems they'd already thought of that one
Can't even use a USB keychain on most of the machines nowadays. All proxy servers I've ever tried are banned too. Bah!

Make your own web proxy at home all you need is an old PC with linux installed and a couple of lines of code.

I run my own proxy on a colo box to get around our work's proxy. If you want to use that (you'll need to know how to find your company's http proxy and use SSH port forwarding) then drop me a PM and I'll send you the details.

It only accepts requests from localhost to stop anonymous abuse from the internet which is why you'll need to SSH tunnel.

Thanks AG. Let me look into the http proxy / SSH tunneling thing and get back to you. Would this make it obvious to anyone that I was doing this? Or is this pretty much under the radar of your average disinterested IT worker?

Edit: They're smart enough to block the port that I tried using for web-based FTP, if that gives any indication of their security levels.

They can't have done, web based FTP uses port 80, the same as http.

It should be pretty much under the radar as you are still using their proxy to connect to the outside world. All that they should see is that all of your traffic is gobbledygook and rather than normally formed GET/PUT messages (as it's encrypted 'til it gets to the foreign proxy). They'd have to be pretty bored to look into it. I've been using this scheme for the past 5 years and haven't heard anything from IT about it.

The way to find out what your proxy is is to open a web browser and navigate to your favourite page outside the company. Open up a command prompt and type 'netstat'. Look for an entry in the foreign address column that is port 3128 or 8080. That'll be the address of your proxy. You can then use that as the http proxy to tunnel ssh sessions outside your firewall (hopefully!).

Except that we're now forced to login via a dumb terminal running a citrix system. Can't even get to a command prompt in Manchester City Council

If Children's Services put as much effort into looking after children as they do into preventing their employees from having the faintest whiff of autonomy, there'd... well.. pah! Something would be different, I'm sure!
