After the numerous Vista bashing and pro Linux posts you will have seen me make you would be forgiven for thinking I was a raging MS hater, not so.

I've been reading up on Windows 7 and so far I'm quite impressed.
OS news have posted an interesting review here and the Microsoft Engineering Windows 7 blog has a really great article about the sensible sounding changes they have made to the taskbar.

Couple that with some rather promising looking benchmark results and I could even be persuaded to give it a try (Once SP1 comes out that is).

Ooh, that's actually looking rather good. If they have sorted out their hardware support, legacy software compatibility, stopped that dumbass thing where they dim the whole screen and give you a confirmation box 20 times during the installation of everything and enabled it to run on less than a liquid cooled supercomputer then I'll definitely give it a try

So it's official, Vista is going the way of ME. Bye bye!

Yeah I think a whole lot of businesses are going to skip Vista and go straight to 7.

From the sounds of things Vista was a major bottom end rewrite which did some useful things (like unify the codebase with server 2008), but as a result the UI and performance was pants. 7 seems like an attempt to actually make it useable.

I thought the register wasn't allowed to like anything?

That would be like Private Eye publishing a story about how they thought the government were doing a jolly good job all things consisdered.

XKCD induced a genuine LOL.

I feel duty bound to post this to quash those soft on Microsoft rumours.

Whilst I commend their thoroughness I have to say that the number of clicks it takes to install isn't really a driving force behind my OS choice

I installed the beta over the weekend. Um... it's shiny (I haven't played with Vista yet). UAC is still a bit annoying, but better than Vista from what I've heard. Apart from that, it runs programs.

It turns out I don't use a computer very much at home anymore.

A couple of guys take a laptop with KDE4 on it round the streets claiming it's Windows 7. And everybody loves it!!!
