Casino Royale 12/10 Let me just get this bit out of the way first: If I had one minor niggly complaint about this film it's that it's potentially a little bit too long. That being said I caught an 11 o'clock showing so it might have just been the lateness of it all. Also, this Bond is totally different to any bond you've seen before. In a totally cool way. The Prestige 8/10 I went to see this last week and was duly impressed. The film focuses on a pair of aspiring magicians (Played by Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale) who develop an intense rivalry. The pair become obsessed with stealing each others secrets which results in tricks aplenty and an escalating series of double crosses which spirals dangerously out of control and ends up consuming and ruining their lives. The film is directed by Christopher Nolan (Batman Begins, Memento) who is fast becoming one of my favourite directors and displays his typical style and love of twists and turns as previously shown in Memento. You definitely need to keep your wits about you so the plot doesn't get away from you. I thought the film was excellent and not really like anything I'd ever seen before. It also has a rather excellent cameo from David Bowie playing a partially fictionalised Nikola Tesla and if that doesn't recommend it to you surely nothing will! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0482571/ Second opinion by Diziet on 23rd Feb '07 8/10 excellent twisty turny story. the characters and plot are completely engaging and the ending is a total shock.      Average Rating 8

Ghostwatcher 7/10 This is one of those absolutely brilliant horror C movies that looks like it was made by a group of friends on very little budget. The acting is a trifle forced at times, the plot is a little non-sensical in places, the atmospheric music has far too much synth in it and a lot of the dialogue is just plain stupid. But the effects are rather well done and it is genuinely freaky in some places. The story revolves around Laura who after a halloween becomes an agoraphobic and barricades herself in her house. A year later she starts to suspect that her house is haunted so she calls in Elizabeth, a ghostwatcher (who pays the bills via a premium webcam, obviously). Along with Niki, Laura's only real link to the outside world, they try to figure out what's going on... Queue spooky happenings, booby traps, various haunted houses and weirdly insistent arguments about the oddest things. It's great!

Searching for Bobby Fischer 9/10 A beautifully evocative and moving study of child genius, the nature of competition, and the pressure placed on children to succeed. Josh Waitzkin, a 7-year old chess prodigy, studies under the tutelage of Ben Kingsley, who plays world champion Bobby Fischer's ex-coach, and struggles to reconcile the aesthetic purity of the game as practised by Fischer with the glamorous world of high-speed chess portrayed by Lawrence Fishburne. Set after Fischer's first disappearance, the film never forces you to watch an actual game of chess, whilst managing to put across the abstract beauty of the game in almost every scene. Far more enjoyable than the title suggests.

idiocracy 7/10 a film by mike judge who made the wonderful Office Space. joe is a military librarian who is average in every way (geddit?) and therefore perfect for the army's latest suspended animation experiment. he's only supposed to go in for a year but, when the leader of the experiment is arrested for being a pimp, he accidentally ends up in stasis for five hundred. when he emerges he finds that the whole world has dumbed down to the point where he is the most intelligent man alive. the president is a WWF star who calls order by firing a machine gun into the ceiling and no one can speak words of more than 3 syllables. the president orders joe to be made secretary of the interior and tasks him to sort out all of america's problems within a week (or he'll kick joe's faggy talkin' ass). this is a brilliant view of how the world could be if we let false celebrities and fast food companies take over our better judgement. its consistently hilarious and the special effects / scenery is superb. i felt it could have been loads better though and in parts it just feels like a live action version of beavis and butthead (one of judge's other creations). good for a laugh but flawed. trad anon: have you actually seen the film? or did you just want to sound clever? Perfume 9/10 The book by Patrick Suskind was often used as an example of a great book which could never be filmed, so as a big fan of the book I went to see the film with some trepidation. I was not disappointed this is an excellent adaptation with some of the most vivid imagery and gorgeous cinematography I've seen in a while. Pans Labyrinth 9/10 The film focuses on Ophelia a young girl who has traveled with her heavily pregnant mother to stay with her new stepfather a cruel Fascist Captain during the Spanish civil war while he battles with republican guerrillas in the Spanish hills. Whilst there she finds an enchanted Labyrinth inhabited, by a Faun who tells her she is the reincarnation of a princess and if she completes three tasks she can travel to the underworld and become immortal. With that premise I thought it was going to be a relatively sweet Disney like film however the 15 certificate suggested otherwise! The film is nothing like you might expect focusing mostly on the brutality of the civil war and the fairytale scenes whilst pivotal to the plot are always left open to interpretation as the fantasy world of a distressed child. The film features some pretty brutal torture scenes and is in Spanish with subtitles, but if you can cope with that you will find an excellent and affecting film Second opinion by Diziet on 22nd Jan '07 10/10 astoundingly brilliant dark fantasy from guillermo del toro. theres a particularly nasty scene with a face and a bottle of wine.      Average Rating 9.5

The Wicker Man (New Version) 4/10 Now obviously trying to do a remake of such a fantastic film is going to be a supremely bad plan. Particularly when it's a classic english film made by americans. However I felt this was worth a little look as it stars and is produced by Nicholas Cage who doesn't do rubbish films. I'd have to say it was about what I expected - a heretical remake pulled about 3 feet out of the mud by a fantastic actor. The film was too close to the original to be distinguished as a new work and too diverse in places (they actually covered Nicholas Cage in bees at one point) to be viewed as a modern tribute to a classic. If you love the original and aren't fussed about Mr Cage then give it a wide berth. If you're a big fan then give it a watch but don't expect too much.

Out of Reach 0/10 It's terrible. Steven Seagal is by far the best actor in it (and that's saying something). Think a film acted out by cricket stumps. I'm sure that one guy got a role in the film because he delivered pizza to the set. It's so bad that it's not even funny.

the last king of scotland 9/10 forest whittaker plays comedy psycho idi amin in this frankly jaw dropping film. james mcavoy is doctor nicholas gorrigan who heads to uganda from his homeland of scotland after graduation to help the poor and needy. gorrigan has a chance meeting with amin on the roadside and is instantly charmed by this big, lovable bear of a man. before too long, gorrigan is working as amin's personal physician. not long after this, things begin to go horribly wrong. whittaker's performance as the paranoid, fun-loving and utterly, utterly insane ugandan dictator is absolutely flawless. one second he's laughing heartily about his love of scotland (amin crowned himself 'king of scotland' not long after he took control of uganda) the next he's dismembering people without a moment's pause. gorrigan's slow descent into hell at the hands of amin is terrifying and i couldn't help put myself in his shoes (shoes which were no doubt soaked with his own urine). its that kind of film - it just sucks you in and won't let go until its over. be warned, there are at least two scenes which are gauranteed to make your stomach churn. brilliant.

Blood Diamond 8/10 Amazingly well made film but one of the most distressing storylines I've seen in a long time. The film centres around the conflict in Sierra Leone in the late 1990s and the militia groups who massacre villages, enslave people to work looking for diamonds and turn childen into soldiers. The sight of a group of children walking through a village mowing down paople with machine guns because they've been brainwashed to do so will stay with me for a long time. The main characters are Leonardo diCaprio who is a diamond smuggler, exchanging the diamonds for weapons and Jennifer Connely who plays a reporter trying to expose the evil of the conflict diamond trade. Well worth seeing, but don't expect to feel particularly happy at the end of it. 300 8/10 film adaptation of frank miller's graphic novel. by zeus, this film is gorgeous to look at! very little plot or character development but who needs it when you have almost two hours of some of the finest action you'll ever see. king leonidas (played by gerard butler via sean connery) gathers together 300 of his hardest spartan warriors to take on the thousands of the persian army. much chest beating, head slicing and camp buttock slapping ensues. the set pieces are breathtaking and the various monsters are stunning. a bit of a no-brainer (which makes me wonder why the iranians got their knickers in such a twist over it) but tremendous fun no less. Second opinion by Amanshu on 10th Apr '07 10/10 Oh yeah! They get the plot out of the way in the first ten minutes or so. There's some crappy subplot going on but whatever. This film is all about the comedy violence and partial nudity. Oh, and it wasn't just the Spartans, there were a thousand or so Arcadians sitting around as well. 20 of them get to fight at one point because they can, but that's really irrelevant. For the record it does suffer slightly from the wannabe Sin City stylisation effect. And the Gladiator (I'll be generous) homage is a triffle obvious. But again whatever. Seriously, I think the only reason they stopped it so soon was because they'd used up their blood and body parts budget. It's way cool! A Scanner Darkly 8.5/10 Another adaptation of a novel by the futureshock genius that is Philip K. Dick. Semi-autobiographical, written in 1977. Infinitely less hype than the last film of a PKD novel, probably due to the absence of Tom Cruise (always a bonus). The film is set around a surreal, dystopian Orange County in 7 years from now and focuses on drug culture, drug abuse and several social and ethical issues, the most prominent of which is the sacrifice of another human being for a "greater good". The science fiction themes are subtle and believable, yet maintain that inspirational and ultimately 'cool' factor. The film looks like a moving graphic novel, due to cel-shading techniques and rotoscoping, with each minute of animation requiring 500 hours of work. Winona Ryder looks just as good semi-animated as she does on film. Not half as involving as the novel, but still very very good.

this is england 10/10 this is the new film from shane meadows who also made A Room For Romeo Brass and the mind-bendingly brilliant Dead Mans Shoes. it tells the story of a 12 year old boy in the early 80's who is befriended by a gang of northern soul loving skinheads. gradually he is accepted into the group and begins to dress like a skinhead. the first part of the film revolves around the gang having harmless fun, listening to music and generally mucking about. this gang of skinheads are as fluffy as you like. about 20 minutes in, just when you're thinking that its the loveliest film you've ever seen, everything goes dark. a bad skinhead is released from prison and turns up at the gang's house. he's the leader of the gang's best mate and he's just done 5 years in pokey for him. naturally he demands some respect. he's also unhappy about the fact that one of the gang members is a black guy. the bad skinhead begins to systematically corrupt the group, turning them into his pet neo-fascists, the little boy included. the ending is one of the most shocking things you'll see in a movie. absolutely amazing. watch this and then watch Dead Mans Shoes. and then have nightmares for a week. the heart is deceitful above all things 1/10 a truly horrifying film about child abuse. simply put, this was the bleakest most harrowing hour and a half of my life. i had to cleanse my soul after by watching Good Will Hunting.

Vacuuming Completely Naked in Paradise 3/10 A young man's life falls apart as he steps into the shoes of a dead vacuum-cleaner salesman. Taken under the wing of Timothy Spall, contender for Salesman of the Year, the hero flaps aimlessly through life, but before anything can come of this, the director apparently got bored of the whole film after an hour and a quarter and simply gave up. Nothing is resolved, it appears the writers ran completely out of ideas and decided to make the ending about Spall's bid for the salesman prize instead. Spall is excellent as always, and there is a sprinkling of fairly funny comedic moments, but otherwise this is a complete waste of time, albeit only 75 minutes of.

Ghostbusters 10/10 Back off, man - I'm a scientist. One of my favourite films of all time, completely delicious from start to finish. Three scientists turn to busting ghosts for a living after they're kicked out of their university, and... well, you know the rest. Surely everyone in the world has seen this film (and if not, I hereby command you to remedy this situation with immediate effect. Go on, it's only 3 quid in HMV at the moment). Bill Murray is his usual genius self as Peter Venkman. Dan Aykroyd is adorable as Ray Stantz (I may actually be in love with Dan Aykroyd), and Harold Ramis has very tall hair as Egon Spengler. Quality supporting cast - honourable mention for poor ol' William Atherton, whose role as Walter Peck has apparently led to him having to endure "Dickless!" being yelled at him regularly since 1984. Considering the film's 23 years old, most of the effects still look great. OK, not the Terror Dogs so much, but tell me Mr Stay Puft would be improved by CGI and I'll call you a liar and a fool right to your face. Belter of a script by Aykroyd and Ramis, with more classic lines than you can shake a PKE meter at: "Listen - can you smell something?" (my personal fave) "No human would stack books like this" "I collect spores, moulds and fungus" "... dogs and cats living together - mass hysteria!" "Tell him about the Twinkie" and, of course: "Yes, it's true - this man has no dick" All this, plus the best theme song in the history of everything. I love this film with every fibre of my being. The Departed 9.5/10 The CIA and the mob have got moles in eachother's organisation and the film follows the paths of both sides as they try to outwit eachother. A fantastic plot that's complicated but entirely believable sucks you in from the start and doesn't release you until after the end, held together by some fantastic acting from the three main characters (Jack Nicholson, Matt Damon and Leonardo DiCaprio). A truly engrossing drama that is well worth watching if you ever get the chance. I'm just really disappointed that I missed it in the cinema.

The Ecstacy of Robert Carmichael 1/10 16 year old virtuoso cellist.... bad crowd.... drugs..... school girl gets raped.... more drugs.... even more drugs.... woman gets raped in front of husband by three 16 year old boys in a most brutal fashion. Pointless. 2 x 0.5 points for the 2 scenes in the film that are actually interesting and show some promise. Given the choice of sitting through this again or spending 2 hours sticking needles in my eyes, i would choose the latter.

transformers 9/10 a blistering action movie with jaw dropping special effects. its funny, loud, engaging and well written. the transformers themselves are downright bloody amazing. the human characters are far too numerous (too many side plots for my liking) but the central character played by shia labouf is outstanding and his relationship with the transformer Bumblebee is quite poignant (like a robotic ET). if you're after a total no-brainer with more hi-tech weaponry and pure fun than you can shake a stick at, Transformers is for you. I'm not ashamed to report that a little nostalgic shiver went down my spine the first time Optimus Prime boomed "autobots: roll out ..." -1 point for lack of title theme music, -1 point for the realisation that no matter how good the special effects, nothing beats what happens in a nine year old's brain when they're legging it round the playground pretending to be Hot Rod. Live Free Or Die Hard 10/10 i really wanted to hate this because i really didn't believe they could do another die hard film and make it as good as the others. god i was wrong! john mclane is still the same old reluctant hero but 20 years older than he was in the first film. he's the same person but he clearly feels the pain these days due to being of almost pensionable age. he's also grizzled, bald and grumpy. however he still kicks bottom as and when required, usually following the bottom kicking with one of his wry quips. LFODH is a fantastic old-school action movie (as it should be seeing as its Die Hard). the action scenes and the special effects are bloody brilliant. i'm off to watch the first three now.

Halloween 2007 1/10 This is a remake of the classic Halloween but this time Rob Zombie steps into the directing chair. Well what a load of rubbish if you like the classic you will hate this as the dialogue is poor and the whole Michael Myers thing is changed . Dont watch unless you really have to Nuff said

Superbad 10/10 This is basically American Pie but wilder. 3 'geeks' are trying to loose their virginity before the end of the term and this is one gross out comedy where you will laugh until you can laugh no more. Like American Pie but better and funnier. From IMDB: the word F*** is used 186 times in this film. Wrong Turn 2 10/10 If you liked the first one you will love this one. Basically Henry Rollins (yes Henry Rollins) fronts a reality tv show about a bunch of 20 somethings living after the apocalypse set in the woods where the inbred hillbillies are based. One by one they encounter the human eating hillbillies and meet there death in lots of grizzy ways. Some cheesy one liners but great Film. Not for the faint hearted. Withnail & I 10/10 I can't believe I've got to this point in my life without watching it. Whilst trying to decide what the main feature of a film night at a friend's house was going to be, somebody suggested Withnail & I, to which I replied 'yeah, ok, I haven't seen it and everybody bangs on about....' I was interrupted by three simultaneous looks of disgust, which quickly morphed into pity. 'How are we even friends? This must be remedied.' So on Saturday night, I watched it. When the credits went up I straight away wanted to watch it again. British film-making at it's absolute finest. Second opinion by Diziet on 25th Sep '07 8/10 I DEMAND TO HAVE SOME BOOZE! Shoot 'em up 10/10 This film doesn't try for any of that plot nonsense. I mean there's a bit of a plot, but mainly it's about Clive Owen and Paul Giamatti fighting each other. The great thing about it is it doesn't try to explain why they're as good as they actually are. Clive Owen is just that good at killing things and Paul Giamatti is just that good at reading people. It makes for a hilarious film where the (many) bad guys are mainly there as cannon fodder for Clive Owen and to catch bullets meant for Paul Giacomo. Some of the stunts are completely unexpected, but completely in fitting with the idea of the film. What little plot there is revolves around a baby that Clive Owen ends up protecting and which Paul Giamatti wants dead. That's about it. Monica Bellucci provides the love interest and does a terrific turn as a wet-nurse hooker - which leads to one of the funniest sex scenes I've seen in a while. I highly recommend it to anyone. If you don't get exactly what this film is all about by the end of the first death (about 3 minutes in) then it's really not for you!

Ratatouille 9/10 I was lucky enough to see a preview of this at IBC in Dolby Digital Cinema (forget your Blu Ray 1080 this was 4000 line HD ) The story focuses on a rat who wants to be a world class chef and the son of a world class chef who can't cook who teams up to run a kitchen. As you would expect from Pixar the voice acting and script are note perfect and the laughs keep coming at a rate of knots. I didn't really see how a film about a cooking rat living in Paris could be as funny as the Incredibles which for me is the current Pixar high watermark, but some how it pulls it off. The audience composed of broadcasting techies from the four corners of the earth were rolling in the aisles laughing for pretty much the whole film and I must say I loved it. The photo realism of the backdrops has really stepped up a notch, but luckily the characters are still deliberately cartoony caricatures which stops the film looking creepy like Polar Express. The traditional Pixar pre-film short is almost worth the price of admission on its own. It revolves around an incompetent alien taking his human abduction UFO driving license.

Delicatessen 9/10 I like films that assume you know what is going on, rather than explaining everything to you in some annoying narrative voice-over or by using obvious plot devices. Delicatessen does just that. It makes no attempt to explain the mise-en-scene and the antagonist doesn't reveal his innermost secrets to people before he has at them with a meat cleaver. You know within the first few minutes that the film is set in a post-apocalyptic 1950's France. You dont need to know why, it just is. You know why the antagonist wants to kill people. I digress. This film is very funny. Very, very funny. All of the characters are endearing and the standard of acting superb. It is beautifully shot and delightfully wierd. Yet, for me, none of these things come close to the absolute genius use of sound. Delicatessen is 16 years-old now and feels like it was released this week. Hukkle 8.5/10 What a thoroughly bizzare film. A Hungarian black comedy with no dialogue that is beautifully shot and makes excellent use of sound. A quote on the cover says "think Microcosmos meets Twin Peaks" and I can't really sum it up any better than that.
