ANCHOR STEAM ALE 9.5/10
Produced by the Anchor brewery in California this is a king among real ales. Very flavourful, almost fruity whist retaining great smoothness. Definite fizz to it and best served chilled.
It's very rarely to be found in the UK and then only in bottle form (I'm told you can get it draught in the US, I can't wait to try that one) but well worth stocking up on when you spot it. Also try their Porter and Liberty Ale. Their other brews I have never seen in the UK.

John Smiths 6/10
This is your absolutely standard bitter. It's available everywhere. It's a reasonable price. It's dark brown. It has no outstanding features whatsoever. It's the average beer of choice. The upsides though, are that it does taste good. Not special or memorable, not hoppy or fruity, but if there's John Smiths about, you know you've got something perfectly pleasant to drink, it's not too heavy, it's a beer for a night out, quaffable and does the job. Middle of the Road and happy there, think The Carpenters not Pantera, think Dean Martin singing not Dean Martin drinking.
Second opinion by Agentgonzo on 21st Aug '08 3/10
It's weak, watery and lifeless. It completely lacks sparkle and has a dreary finish. Plus, the creamy head is just wrong. It's on par with worthingtons.

Guinness 9/10
Pint of black, and easily the best pint in most bars. Purists will only drink regular Guinness, and quite justifiably - Cold Flow / Extra Cold just don't taste the same. Often one of the more expensive pints [except, for some reason, the Student's Union] and it's definitely a slow drink, but if you're not seeking oblivion it's the perfect pint to waste a night with.

Don't try downing one - it'll sit in your stomach like a cannonball. Also, watch carefully as the bartender pulls your pint - if they don't do the two-stage pour, refuse it because it'll taste manky.

Snakebite Black 7/10
Simply take a pint glass, pour into it half a pint of cider, half a pint of any lager, and a nice large shot of blackcurrent in the form of the letter 'S' on the head of the drink. Drink immediately, but only when NOT wearing white. A bitter, sweet, and highly alcoholic beverage for students on a night out, or anyone that wants to join the fast track to getting hammered!

too much will bloat you, and there's a major spillage on clothes risk!!!

Hoegaarden 8/10
Lovely cloudy beer that's not quite lager and not at all ale.
A good all year beer.
Second opinion by Agentgonzo on 21st Aug '08 9/10
Fresh, zesty and best served with a slice of lemon (though people in this country don't seem to realise that). Best served very chilled. The beer that I grew up on. Only surpassed by the 'Speciale' and 'Grand Cru', heavier versions which are sublime.

Delicious Belgian brew that's remarkably strong so usually appears by the half. One for sipping rather than chugging. Very flavourful and suprisingly light. The dark stuff ain't bad neither.

Magners Irish Cider 10/10
Personally, this would be my drink of choice. Sweeter than Strongbow, but not too sweet, I bellieve Magners to be the epitome of liquids commonly served in a pint glass.

The only problem I have with the drink is that it seems to be completely unavailable outside Norn Iron. In the Republic of Ireland, it's called Bulmers, and it's impossible to find on the mainland. But this is your fault, not ours...

PISS. WATER.

In fairness, it is VERY easy to drink, but that's only because it has no flavour. Though if you're looking for oblivion and aren't manly enough to take your spirits, at 5% it's not a bad way to go.

Stalingrad Vodka 7.99/10
Well as far as cheap vodka goes, it has to be said that this is "one of those ones that probably aren't petrol", something I always look for in a bottle of volatile intoxicants. Unless I'm making a molotov cocktail, of course, when I'd recommend 'Kirov' vodka instead.

In fact, as vodka is essentially flavourless, the only real score I can award to this substance is based on its price, and the fact you probably won't go blind with this particular brand.
?6.99 + 1 for not being ethanol

Jack Daniel's old no. 7 Quality Tenessee Sour Mash Whiskey 10/10
One of my personal favourites. Not as sweet as Southern Comfort and not as bad a fire-watereffect as some other whiskey. Whether you're looking for some good, old time sippin' whiskey, something to mix with coke, or something to get you completely blattered, good old Jack will serve.

"I did WHAT with my sister!?" - Jack Daniel's billboard

I'm not even supposed to be here today.
Second opinion by Xander on 9th Nov '08 10/10
My personel favourite substance of abuse and conveniently available almost everywhere. Except Cuba I discovered and I think it's probably hard to come by in the far east but I digress.

Brillant drink to either drink slowly and enjoy or get completely wrecked on.

As Cwgerard points out it's diverse. It like it with coke (as in cola) myself. To expand it's usage I recommend it's use in cooking makes a burger more interesting.

Jack Daniels we salute you!

Kronenberg Blanc 8/10
Can usually be found in bigger supermakets and better stocked offys.
Though it is a white beer it has very little in common with Hoegarten.
It's quite supprising how fruity and full in flavour it is and it would probably even sit well with those of the beer drinking comunity who regard everything that doesn't have the consistancy of bisto as watery poofters beer.

ernest & julio gallo white grenache 9/10
not usually a big fan of wine, but this fruity rose has converted me.

its deceptively tasty and too much can leave you crawling round the coffee table barking like a patterdale terrier, but its great fun to drink. its almost fizzy and i'd definitely recommend it as an alternative to several cans of lager on a school night. its much more civilised and doesn't leave your stomach feeling like its been attacked by an over-enthusiastic bouncy castle operative.

Wolff Blass Cabernet Sauvignon (yellow label) 9.5/10
My favourite of all red wines. From Australia but is absolutely delish.

They also do a more expensive President's Selection which I currently haven't convinced myself to spent a lot of money on but will no doubt sometime soon.

guinness bitter 7/10
the only canned bitter i've drank that has some flavour. its pleasurable to drink, smooth and slightly stronger than your usual stuff (john smiths, worthingtons, boddys etc).

a pleasant buzz with hardly any hangover. the only real problem i have is that its 4.4% (although this is also a benefit really - other bitters appear to have no effect on me). so while you think you're not going to get plastered swallowing large amounts of the creamy bugger (!) you soon realise that you're rat-arsed and its only 7.30pm.

Theakston's Old Peculier 12/10
The Legend. A thing of wonder that has been a source of unending delight to my Yorkshire days. I can't decide what I like about it most; its warming, mellow, fruity taste; its mysterious dark ruby colour (which reaches almost mystical qualities when you've had a pint or three and hold it up to the light for inspection ... "oooh, it glows! It is calling me!"); its name (the above is not a spelling error ... a Peculier is apparently some sort of old-fashioned name for a member of the clergy); the fact that it is (allegedly) served in Italian coffee bars in espresso glasses for the discerning client.

However this stuff is not to be approached lightly. 5.6% ABV - more than three pints and I need assistance getting home.

Even foreigners (non-Yorkshire) can apparently get it in bottles from the co-op.
Second opinion by Emo Squid on 7th Mar '07 10/10
Had the pleasure of quaffing a few pints of this over the weekend and the resulting horror of trying to walk to my tent after said few pints.
The trouble is, it's absolutely delicious - rich and malty. It goes down far too easily and makes you slur your speech/lose the use of your legs relatively quickly. Has been known to cause hallucinations.

Makes one of the best steak in ale pies you will ever taste.
Second opinion by Agentgonzo on 21st Aug '08 10/10
Pretty much perfect in every way. A deep rich ruby colour that's almost opaque and a light-brown head that clings to the glass. On the nose, slight floral aromas seep through, but the overwhelming scent is of thick malt with more than a hint of toffee. Upon drinking, there is a rich mouthfeel that coats the palette in a thick but refreshingly warm veneer of flavoursome malts with a hint (though never overpowering) bitterness to it. The hop flavours come around to finish it off in perfect balance leaving a slight aftertaste of caramel that lingers warmly for a little.

'premium ale' that tastes like flat stella artois.

it says 'deceptively drinkable' on the label. 'definitely disgusting' would be closer to the truth.

Yes. Very poor. Very poor indeed. Hard to think it comes from the same brewery as Golden Badger, or what ever it's called.

The AF stands for 'Alcohol Free', but you wouldn't know from the taste. Not that I've ever been a big lager drinker, but if you want a refreshing pint* without any alcohol, this stuff really hits the spot. Crisp, clean and refreshing.

Greene King Abbot Ale 10/10
Amazingly full-bodied cask ale with a caramel/toffee-like sweetness, nice hop balance and great aroma. Excuse my uninspiring adjectives, I'm currently nursing a hangover from the stuff! One of my personal faves.

A good attempt by the Greene King brewery to make a good ale. It's got a warming mouthfeel with not a huge amount of bitterness. Suffers from the chalk-taste that plagues all Greene King beers.

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale 7/10
Taste wise, this is a superb APA. However, it is draught, so it ain't really an ale in my book and has a lager-esque fizz to it.
Here comes the knockout blow: it will set you back a cool 4-quid a pint!!!!!

Why would I drink this when there's cask Deuchars just 3 taps away at £2.40 a pint???? Why, i ask you, why???!!
Second opinion by Spanners on 18th May '07 10/10
This is my second favourite beer of all time, after Anchor Liberty Ale
It's a California based brewery and I've never seen it on draught over here which probably explains the price. It's quite rare over here but it can occasionally be found in 300ml bottles at specialist off-licences and, rather randomly Stirchley Co-op.
If you can tell me where to find a draught pint of this in the UK I shall be your friend forever

Augustiner Weissbier 8.5/10
I'm slightly concerned that this is my 3rd consecutive review of an alcoholic beverage, but non the less, i feel the need to share my newfound love of this hefewiessen.

Fans of Schneider-Weisse, Franziskaner, Weinstephaner and other quality hefewiessen should track down a few bottles of this stuff and be prepared to be amazed. Smooth, fruity and rich with a vanilla edge to it. From one of the oldest breweries in the world.

An attempt from Paul Theakston to recreate the Old Peculier from his former brewery. Similar in almost every way, yet sub-par when compared to his former masterpiece. Still a fantastic pint.
